Su visita, la segunda de un personero estadounidense de esa envergadura a nuestro país en menos de dos semanas — tras el Secretario de Estado,— tuvo como objetivo reforzar las relaciones bilaterales en el ámbito de la Defensa, tomando en cuenta el ingreso de nuestro país al Comité de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas.
Perry llegó desde Puerto Montt, a las 9.30 horas, al aeropuerto Arturo Merino Benítez, a bordo de un avión de la FACh, acompañado por el ministro de la Defensa y el subsecretario de Marina, entre otras autoridades.
Tras una breve ceremonia Perry abordó el avión Boeing 747 de la presidencia de su país y viajó junto con sus asesores a la ciudad de Caracas, desde donde viajará de regreso a Washington próximamente.
El Secretario de Defensa estadounidense sostuvo dos encuentros de trabajo con su homólogo chileno y se reunió también con el Presidente Frei. Asimismo, almorzó con los Comandantes en Jefe de las Fuerzas Armadas y autoridades ministeriales chilenas, dictó una charla sobre el conflicto en Bosnia para los alumnos de las academias de guerra del Ejército, Armada y Fuerza Aérea y visitó la novena versión de la Feria Internacional del Aire y del Espacio, Fidae 96.
