Doce años después de referéndum en el que los ucranianos decidieron su independencia tras la desmembración de la antigua URSS, este inmenso país se ha encontrado con una situación lingüística bastante complicada. La decisión de adoptar el ucraniano como única lengua oficial del país, con el fin de ucranizar la sociedad, fue bastante conflictiva, puesto que hay zonas en las que la población de origen ruso, o bien, la población ruso-parlante es superior a la ucraniana.
Actualmente Ucrania, ocupa el segundo lugar en extensión de Europa, tan sólo superado por la Federación Rusa. Nunca en su historia, Ucrania ha contado con tan enorme territorio, siendo independiente. Con una situación geográfica envidiable, lugar de paso entre Oriente y Occidente, y con el río Dniéper, que divide en dos partes de norte a sur a este país, siempre han sido tierras que se han visto envueltas en largas luchas y que han servido de paso o asentamiento a muchos pueblos, que de una forma u otra, han dejado su huella en este país.
